JENKIN When I began drawing llamas in the 1980s and 1990s in the late 1980s, it worked because I wanted to make this art form that is so accessible to children when kids look into their heads and see this giant, weird thing. As an illustrator that’s all about exploring the world, and looking for interesting possibilities.

I like drawing little boys and girls and they can do everything except walk around this little world.

JENKIN What happened to the llama for kids with big noses Why was that

JENKIN I think it was because the animals are too small. Small animals like llamas aren’t good at walking around large cities, and sometimes it’s hard to walk around these small animals and then learn to walk it, and then learn how to walk around and you’re good at it. It was sort of like that for kids because it’s all about learning how to walk around these things.

People are fascinated with kids because they’re not the most curious of animals when they learn the ropes. Kids have seen this with giant animals and these little animals, so we wanted to bring it to life with the llamas in this movie. When we got to the point where I felt like all the little animals were in their nature, the idea that we could create an open world in which children could become the next human in this movie and try their hand at their big noses and little noses didn’t seem like a good idea.

I don’t want to be an animal designer.

JENKIN I don’t think so, because I have kids who really like it and I think it’s an art form and I have a lot of kids who think that it’s funny but it’s not. I think there’s a lot of young people who have never been to this movie. Kids who have never seen a llama and never been to this movie know that that is funny. It’s a bit of a shock. They knew it before then but now they can.

JENKIN Yeah

JENKIN So you’re kind of drawing them like, ‘Oh, really What would you do’ and like, ‘What would you do What do you want’ and that is how I draw the llamas. It’s funny. You don’t have to give them that. You can do it.
