The American Medical Association is urging the state’s health commissioner to consider making changes to the California health-care system that would give doctors access to lower cost medication and allow the practice of opt-in prescribing.

In order to continue to thrive, California must maintain its competitiveness in the quality of care and access to high quality treatments through an extensive and innovative network of integrated physicians and nurses with a variety of specialty areas to the state’s needs, the AMA states.

Physicians in San Mateo County, however, say the move could further stifle competition for lower cost drugs. As a result, patients are often faced with the fact that they don’t need to pay more for the healthiest medications such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

The move comes a week after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a case that the nation can’t force a hospital to charge more for the treatment it offers because it will pay a higher premium for it.

An American Medical Association spokesman declined to comment on what the AMA is urging legislators in both California and in Washington to do.

The AMA is also asking officials in Washington to pass resolutions that would prohibit or make mandatory new fee-based fee-based payment system when the provider is no longer offering a high-quality care for which the taxpayer has a right under the law.

This is the first time that the AMA has organized an official conference to consider a fee-based system for state health care programs, the New York Times reports.
