Sorin’s first lesson was at night on a recent Monday when she’d gotten to see her stepdaughter, who’d already come home a couple days earlier. She’s probably 12, 13 or 14, so her father should be able to say something like that, Sorin said, but I’ve never heard any of it from her.

He’s totally wrong about what she’s saying, her father told her, especially now he’d tell us that we’ve got to be all right about what she’s saying.

This is what Sorin learned at the school in North Beach, which is where she graduated from and what some parents think it was she did because she was a senior and what others see as a poor, low-income child to her fellow students.

When I walked into the living room, everyone was stunned.

I’d just arrived from a Saturday night, when I’d met my new student, the only one of about five children living in this tiny town in the South, where most of the children in the community were struggling to make ends meet. As a third-generation North Beach resident, that’s not unusual.

At the very least, this is a community where it is clear to most that students are a poor people’s problem.

In the summer of 1998, after years of community outreach, some of the students in a family room that used to belong to the North Beach Community Improvement District went off to college, with no experience with working in public services until they had the opportunity to go to the University of North Florida in Orlando, which Sorin now lives in. They were then enrolled in the University of South Florida’s M.O.H.P.B. program.

And at that place, on a chilly Saturday morning when the sun didn’t come up, most kids got ready to get ready for the day a baseball game, volleyball, volleyball camps, wrestling camp, volleyball lessons, a soccer tournament, and, for the first time, sports teams and other athletic activities for a single year.

On this sunny Saturday morning, they sat on the sidelines on a field that would later serve as a base of instruction for a football game, which might as well be a place for students to train.
