PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that his defense is still in the process of getting stronger to overcome the knee injury sustained in the second half of Monday’s 19-17 win over Tampa Bay.

Tomlin said the Steelers could move with speed if there were any questions about their ability to run a zone system through the offensive line.

It’s not that simple now. We’re still in the process of figuring out some of those things, Tomlin said. I’ve talked to Mike (Tomlin) three weeks ago and he said he felt pretty good. We’ve got the strength to do that.

The Steelers, who have beaten the Buccaneers 6-0 and the Ravens 4-2, opened a four-point lead heading into the second half of the season for fourth place in the NFC, 30-24.

Tomlin said he anticipates the team’s play on Monday night could be the greatest in the history of the game.

You look at the tape and it looks like, even this game, our defense is really young, Tomlin said. From the players that we have at the defensive end, just to have that physical presence on both sides of the ball, you look pretty good.

The offensive line was on fire for its first game back after missing seven games with the injury.

A trio of pass interference penalties came in the first quarter of a 21-0 rout. Joe Flacco forced the fumble as Pittsburgh’s only rusher before making it 17-9 with 945 left on the play. Tomlin was trying to force two third downs for the Steelers, but Flacco drove in both for a 37-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
