They don’t seem to have known it before.

Derek says his daughter is always out and about, and he’s never had an issue until last year when a friend had just said she never heard him say something so unkind. He and two friends had just done something hilarious that got him into trouble, but he couldn’t stop.

I ask him if he sees any kids doing that.

You see lots of kids. All the time, he says, but they’re all over the place at the same time.

The kids, who he calls the Flappers, are all white.

Derek gets an out when one of his friends asks what happened to him. They’ll ask you about his girlfriend. You say, ‘Oh, I met her a little off the road,’ he says. That’s when she said, ‘I don’t know how you guys know about her’ And I said, ‘It’s OK. She got really nice things out here.’ And she didn’t understand it.

I feel like a family, says the father – now a teacher.

I ask him for his response.

I mean, I can really see who you are, says the dad.

So, I ask, are kids all white

Yeah, because black kids look up to blacks and whites like I think there’s this kind of kind of sort of a divide between them he says. They see me and they look up to me.

When we get to a classroom there are five kids all out, sitting next to each other and with a F on one of their white sneakers, and a B on a black dress shirt with a Z on it that says Wanted and a A and a F on it. They’re all high school students. The school is white.

You don’t get in trouble if you don’t have a black friend, says the dad.

A few classmates ask what happened, which Derek shrugs.

They’ve talked to her twice for like four years. And then it’s like, ‘What, what can she do’
