They don’t seem to have known it before.
Derek says his daughter is always out and about, and he’s never had an issue until last year when a friend had just said she never heard him say something so unkind. He and two friends had just done something hilarious that got him into trouble, but he couldn’t stop.

Yeah, because black kids look up to blacks and whites like I think there’s this kind of kind of sort of a divide between them he says. They see me and they look up to me.
When we get to a classroom there are five kids all out, sitting next to each other and with a F on one of their white sneakers, and a B on a black dress shirt with a Z on it that says Wanted and a A and a F on it. They’re all high school students. The school is white.
You don’t get in trouble if you don’t have a black friend, says the dad.
A few classmates ask what happened, which Derek shrugs.
