The US government is investigating how US tech companies are using social media to boost their political clout amid reports that US intelligence agencies are monitoring political activity on social media.

The information comes as President Barack Obama’s administration looks to address an ongoing US cybersecurity cyber attack that has cost the US government between 30 billion and 100 billion.

The report said it had been sent by the National Security Agency to intelligence agencies over several months, and that it was not yet clear how it will be applied in response.

This has sparked fears of a cyberwarfare equivalent involving US citizens in the run-up to the Nov 2016 U.S. presidential election which has seen intelligence agencies seek to block, disrupt and even censor online content that could influence the election.

But the information, which has also been shared by the Trump administration, suggests China may be behind these attacks.

The US Cyber Command (CODCO) said there were six spies and one spy who had been monitoring the social media accounts of political leaders online, along with a criminal actor.

They would be in contact with a single target, said a CODCO statement.

Facebook Messenger was among the targets to be monitored. It has been the subject of a renewed debate because of an alleged attempt at political hacking last year which may have been directed at the Trump campaign and may have involved Russian authorities.

While some have said the US intelligence agencies have a need for social media tools to block the propaganda content of news, this is an unusual development since US intelligence agencies and their contractors are widely believed to want to use it to further their own ends.
