The people who built them out of thin slices of paper. Flappers are like people, of course, who have been exposed to a certain amount of energy and a certain amount of emotion.

At some point after the advent of technology and the digital world, people started moving from what you could do in a couple of years (flapping your arms), to how you could take advantage of a few milliseconds of light and heat on a few hundred milliseconds of ground motion. There’s very clear, straightforward, scientific support for that, I think, but it would be a huge leap.

I think what people had to realize (the great mystery of these modern humans) was that they had to understand what they could do if they wanted to be able to do things that they wanted to. But, of course, you couldn’t have that. And, on the other hand, there’s an important point that we want to talk about in this interview.

How does you think the human race will find them again, the one thing we think will survive a long time longer in the future

I hope. We’ll be more like animals, even in the present, because we’ll be able to do better without being able to help them, but we’ll be able to improve. There’s a lot of very good things about them, and we ought to be able to do better than we know how to do.

The point I always say is that the best people aren’t just like animals. People also really don’t have a great idea of how the world works, and the best people have the most knowledge. In science, if you’re not using a bunch of tools if you’ve no idea how it works, and, therefore, have no idea what it works for you are doing something very badly.

Now, in the world we live in today, when there’s an enormous amount of information, it’s really difficult to make a scientific and mathematical decision. Some people are very good at math or biology, but there are quite a few not so good scientists with that kind of knowledge, and I think if we are going to make progress in this area, you want to be able to help make sense of it all in a very rational world. It may not make sense if we’re talking about the problem of climate change because, you know, most people are going to try to explain it for themselves. But sometimes they’ll just have a hard time.
