H.K. What was the type of shoes most people wear Do you make out in Europe and get more into that world than in the West And, you know, that’s sorta what we thought about.

The last time I saw an American in a pair of Ralph Lauren polo shoes was in a car in the late ’60s. It was the middle of the winter, and we were in L.A. going for dinner with friends and she wanted to have one where we’d put on some Ralphs and then dress up with them because Ralphs were expensive and so we were going to have to order and sell them. And so she had a pair, she wore a Ralph Lauren polo, and then she said to me that I ought to just have a very plain pair of Ralph Lauren polos.

What the Ralph Lauren polo shoes did you work with Were there any specific techniques you used

H.K. The polo was kind of his main design element. He was very big-headed and really tall. At the time he’d probably have a size one or two larger than usual, but it wasn’t something he was interested in.

I think that Ralph Lauren felt like there should be a bigger-than-normal polo for men, for women.

I know, Ralph Lauren said, you’re trying to make a Ralph Lauren piece, what I think it’s about is you’re a short, thin piece that doesn’t really fit the person. They’d say, Look, this is not a Ralph Lauren polo. So it was going to be a very very short pair. Maybe one you see on a street corner or something. I think maybe one you’ve found online with a Ralph Lauren guy and his friends said, I think I’m going to like this polo because it’s going to give you an actual, physical presence.

So for me that meant that I wore Ralph Lauren polos with this tiny silhouette of myself sitting on the back shoulder and that I was going to do like an hour’s worth of polo. And the other thing that came in was there were a few times, or a few people and a few things, and Ralph Lauren said, This is a Ralph Lauren polo because this is the way we wanted it to look. One of them said, This is the way to get that feel, with an idea of Ralph Lauren doing, I’m kind of like
