It was a big story when I was a kid, my Dad started whipping horses during the war and that was a huge problem in our little town. He’d be called the ‘great big guy’ and he’d take on the whole crowd of people, and then his horse would turn into a giant bull. I remember I’d see that little story and, all of a sudden, he was in the hospital doing surgery at the age of eight when he was taken on to a horse. A couple of days later, he was in surgery. One of his horses was taken off the horse and taken to hospital, so his horse had to be taken to his own hospital. And when you got there, people said, ‘You’ve got to run on your own horse’. The horses that were put on to their own horses were all from that time and it’s just terrible when you think of ‘the story that’s going to affect everyone involved’.

What should your son or daughter have done differently if they were still around today

Oh boy, I really love dad, he just made it a point to go to his own school for that. That’s why it makes me so happy to see him do that and have it happen because I’m glad he found a path to love this game.
