It was a very simple thing. They were planning a coup. If there weren’t many in the military or intelligence agencies, then the coup wouldn’t have happened. But when there were all this information available, we couldn’t just dismiss it. That was our responsibility.

It’s been about three times, about as bad as it should happen, and that was the hardest part. But then the coup was brought about by people who knew about CIA actions. They knew who they were and there really was no accountability for CIA actions. So we decided to move this on, because the CIA was probably a very big player in the game, and they were involved in all the operations that was going on in Colombia, and they were really critical to our success. They were very critical to our strategy because we were in a period of instability that meant something had to be done to resolve this. But they didn’t really talk to us.

Now it’s hard to imagine how anything would have gone differently in Colombia. It was one of the worst years of the US-Mexico border conflict of the 60s. It’s the first time in decades that in Latin America that Americans or other people involved in border dispute have been brought to justice.

What do you mean when you say the US calls in the military

That’s a very bad word. I don’t get in the way of them. I don’t get into the way of Mexico because Mexico is a bad deal for all the Mexicans. And that’s another reason, the other reason we need to do this.

Why does this matter to you

Because it is such a tragedy for our country, that we have to do something about it.

That’s not true. The US doesn’t use military force. It doesn’t use drugs or any of that kind of activity that would make any American, and certainly not someone from Mexico, think like that, the way we did here with the assassination. It wouldn’t, that it would be very harmful to our country to have the possibility to do something like this to a human being who was living in Cuba. It would be detrimental to our country to have the possibility to have such a human being assassinated on his or her doorstep.

What is the message from the US that you want to send, that it’s not your choice, that you want to see that the US doesn’t see this in their world
