Not really. Some of the races that matter are races that are won for political mileage. Those races tend to have higher turnout among the younger generation than among the older ones. That helps explain why Hispanics were the only demographic group with the highest participation rates with Hispanics making up almost all the white voters that took part in the 2008 presidential election.

But I think the biggest challenge of running for office is to find the right people to represent them. If your goal is to be more like your brother or friend as part of the Hispanic community, you’re probably not the type of person to really run for office.

What do you think What’s changed and what do you hope to accomplish in the coming few years as mayor of New York City

The key is that a majority of people across New York City are engaged in what is called civic activism in order to push for fair and open government in a city that, at the time of its largest political event, is still very progressive. In other words, there is an ongoing and effective effort by our community to push for an economic and social progressive economic policy. And it’s an ambitious, sustained, and creative approach.

There are always going to be people like myself who I hope to help push through the political issues in the city that are necessary to keep us moving forward. One of those people, and he will likely be named Mayor, is John Lindsay (or John when I think of him) who has been running for office for over 30 years. On May 7, 2011, John was elected as the first Latino mayor of New York City. It is his second term as mayor. He’s currently the second Latino mayor in New York City for good reason, though it has taken about 11 years between him and me to get there.

When that’s all said and done we can see a progressive city that can make a successful change in an economy that we’re facing today, which was not the case in our great past. And I think every little change is going to make this city better, because I think if we really took advantage of our past, as the founders of the City, we could make this city better as both people of color and as a city that is moving forward as a city on its own terms.

That kind of focus, and engagement, is what is needed to keep New Yorkers focused on these issues that many people in New York have so far been unwilling to talk about publicly. I think if we were
