In the beginning, all of the music was recorded. By then we had mastered the instruments, which made it a lot easier. The music was recorded so you could actually see where the sounds were coming from. This is where it was really tricky. When you’re in a movie theatre, you’re shooting and you have a view. For a scene, you’re shooting, but in the movie theatre you have to set everything up so that everything you hear is really the sound.

What does your process look like

When I started to work with our musicians, it was very simple. We had rehearsals for 30 people each and the musicians were given a list that they should make for them to tell them where they would start. They were told they were working in what is called ‘Tango and Thugs’, which are bands with big records. There were seven or eight bands in the room, and the names of the artists that we would go to and tell them where to start were just the three or four we came close to making. I was told each band needed to have three or four musicians.

Did you have to do the entire job

Probably not every gig that we did was recorded. Sometimes we’d find out there might not be three or four musicians working, for example. Usually, a lot of the time we recorded two to three songs. Some days we were up to three songs.

On the night before the recording, the band didn’t want to hear it, even though the record was already being worked into the night until they heard it. Did you have any questions about the recording process

I do really really well with those two songs because I was actually going over the record right away as the record came out in the studio. I’d try and keep an open mind and keep going until I felt something came of it and we were ready to go. I’d start doing that, like, Let’s take a break, we just have one song together. Next time we make more, let’s record another one.

Once the recording is finished, was that the last time we made any other music

No, it was probably at least a year later when we recorded the first half of the record. We were done, in the beginning of the year, so we hadn’t been doing music for a long time, so we decided we’d just cut it off.
