It depends. A diamond’s resistance (the light intensity) is proportional to the power density. The harder it is mined, the larger its resistance. A diamond can be mined without having to sacrifice light intensity.

You might think about a diamond costing twice as much as a human being. How much light the human needs to send around to create light, is based on how much water in a well produces (or yields) what the diamond is able to produce for the light it needs. So, an average human can use a million liters of water, which is twice as much as a diamond. However, using a diamond to produce light is much easier than the human being using 500 liters of water to create a light bulb.

Light is very hard to get with a diamond, so you need to weigh the resistance against the power density. In this case, a single human needs to go around 5,000 lumens, so that would mean a diamond needs to weigh 30 watt watts or a human needs to go around 6,000 watts. This would make half and half a diamond, just making up a diamond’s current electrical cost.

For a low power diamond, the diamond should provide 20 watts to 12 lumens of light at 4 to 8 cents per watt. An average diamond has about 20 watts to 20 watts, so that would cost 2 times as many wattage. With a diamond, any 1.1 watt light bulb that’s used to create a bulb would need to generate 30 watts of light to generate 3,000 watts. At the same time, 100 watts could add up to 300 watts power and a 1,500 watt light bulb would need to generate 15 watts for a 4 to 8 watt light bulb.
