On November 7, 2004, the first black person on the cover of the first issue of Vanity Fair, James D’Angelo, came to speak on the panel at an event titled Black People in U.S. Comics What We Can Do About It at the Playboy Club in New York City.

The discussion was dominated by the subject of what would become the first black comic book and film. D’Angelo suggested that an audience will look at comics and think How is that going to do for us, because we’re the only comic book industry

D’Angelo was skeptical about the first part. We’re doing what we’re supposed to do now, the former editor-in-chief said, which is to make you stop saying ‘What is blackness’ I mean there’s no blackness in comics. D’Angelo’s questions were well received by the audience who were left to fend for themselves on how they would choose their characters and how they would interpret their own characters in the face of the current black culture in general and the white savior genre in particular. Some criticized his answers for not addressing any of the most obvious questions being raised by those on the ground about race within his company and the way the magazine treats non-black superheroes. Others were concerned about D’Angelo’s stance on the issues. One commenter wondered about the book’s racial focus. Are there black people out there who are not saying things like, ‘We don’t want to write this,’ D’Angelo told Vanity Fair this summer. ‘What do us do’ Not here. It’s just an issue, is my question.

D’Angelo and his editors also wanted more people to look at his writing, to be curious about it and to ask them questions, while at the same time not putting themselves at risk to keep the conversation focused even on issues they had to deal with.
