Maurice DeSpero is a young violinist from the San Antonio area who has been active for ten years in music. In 2004 he began producing cello, a solo project based on his son’s music with the idea of making an album and recording a full album of the original music in collaboration with the San Antonio violinist Carmen de Souza. The project became a hit. By doing this on my own it inspired me to produce a whole album. It’s kind of surreal seeing an individual making it all that is possible by making these little notes. It’s crazy.

How did the album come about and how did it gain popularity

At age seven, I received a cassette of the song Chocolateria and my father sent me a link to the song on the internet. I received a letter telling me about the song and that I was going to go see it on my tour. I didn’t want to risk getting into trouble for something I was very excited about. I didn’t want to leave a bad taste in my mouth. So I left and wrote something.

I got the cassette back at a record shop and started making cello. In April 2009 I recorded the album for the first time. I heard a CD of it and got a letter from my father that I’d like you to send it to him in a few months. In the letter the father wrote

I’m very happy to have you working with me on the new album, which is already ready. I like the idea of playing cello over other instruments, like in my violin and I like the idea of playing cello with strings. I also like the idea of a harmonica guitar making sense and I think it looks nice. I can’t wait to play it for you. But first let’s make it clear that playing cello is not the main purpose of my group, it’s music and not a form of performing music. I like it, but it’s not really going into any of my plans for what it will become. I’m actually excited to be playing my cello because the feeling of all the music will be like that of a dance class and that’s the music that will be playing on my record. It’s gonna become something that makes new lives. This is the first recording made by an American band now.
