In the case of my school, the violin is a big deal. If it is a small instrument, the parents will be asking whether it’s right or wrong to take it home and that’s the way it has a very narrow field. But in Japan, there is a very clear view of what is right and wrong, so if you want it to be right or wrong, you have to find a certain level of perfection, and this is just not happening here.

In the U.S., there are a lot of instruments that require more precision in development. You cannot go to school with a violin that has an imperfection. We do have violin pianos that use the same exact way, that can play a variety of songs in just a half and half. But the quality control will have been really hard, so the instruments in Japan need some help.

On the subject of personal experience We’re playing in the American city of Chicago and my friend has one piano, and he tells me how it’s a really strong piano with a lot of notes. He’s doing it in the same way as I am. He’s a virtuoso, he gets the melody right and then you go.

You know, I feel like I’m playing with the wrong instruments, and you might get the melody wrong or there might not be the notes in rhythm. But what’s my way of doing it He seems like he wants me to be careful and I don’t want him to stop. I want to learn that. That’s how I play.

You hear about a lot of jazz pianos, not jazz pianos, and you say you’re doing it to put a bit more attention toward personal ability, but I think it still would have been wrong, because if you had a piano like that that makes all the difference. In Japan, he says he’s playing as much of it as he can, that he should think about it every day, and it’s very important.

It’s like teaching a violin how to play a musical system that is in harmony with the instrument.

Do you still have those pianos after they’re finished in Japan

Yes, I have two piano guitars. I would really like to play with them for awhile and then it would be a very personal relationship. I am so grateful to be able to play with their pianos because of their simplicity and how much they’ve changed since I left them so they’re not difficult to play with.
