The first thing your violin teacher suggested was that maybe for those of us who grew up seeing the violin play, you just stop and relax. It’d just be less distracting and more fun for you.

Well, I don’t know, but it would’ve been nice to stop and relax at home a little and do as you instructed.

What happened to the violin’s sound Did that affect your musical ability so much during your studies

I guess I think at some point it really took away from what I was doing. I don’t think it affected the sense of melody I think the violin has a very unique way to get that right. I don’t know what that is. Maybe it’s just that the violin is tuned to the different types of sounds. Or maybe it’s that I like playing a melody that comes through the throat as well. It’s just the kind of music that makes people feel comfortable.

What do you think will likely affect your career as a musician

Right now your violin is still very much considered a part of my repertoire. You should check for a certain type of instrument or something that might appeal to you. I’ve played with a few different guitarists, and I’ve used them a fair amount on my violin. If I ever did the same thing, maybe I’d just try one other instrument. I want to try something different, and you’re going to want to try playing my violin differently. My first gig with a particular guitar player was when we played an acoustic. He had a particular guitar and he just played that particular little note in a way to make it seem like a really big thing and I was really excited to play.

The next gig was when I would actually play a mandolin and my guitar didn’t seem to give me very much of a boost. I was more to the left of the mandolin at first and then, at the end of the day, when I got to the right of my mandolin, it would just become an almost robotic feel.

Did this kind of development affect your music as a musician
