What does the UK do when a globalised world is going to become global, and what can we do about it

With the world’s economy growing at an unprecedented rate, many countries are preparing for the big one - the Asian growth and the rise of the emerging markets.

The UK is the exception. Its GDP has grown almost twice as fast and the world has a growing economy in every region of the world except China, which is also the first country to record a real growth rate during the global downturn, in 2003-06. The US has enjoyed a similar economic feat since then.

But is the UK’s position in the world real Does it represent a threat or a challenge Is the economy really ready What would happen if Europe’s recovery takes place at the same pace

In the UK, the answer to that depends on two things. First, how big will the UK be Second, does the UK’s growth lead the world to create a third world

One of the defining aspects of the UK’s position is this

As we’ve seen from the past 30 years, the economy has grown at a level equivalent to 7 annual growth. This growth would be a good thing and if only we could reverse the momentum (as shown by the recent UK economy data) then the country would gain more employment and income from exports to the EU.

The OECD has been predicting that GDP levels will increase from 7.5 to 14.5 relative to the UK’s. The OECD has also predicted that growth on 20th century levels will reach a peak - so this is definitely a good thing with the UK.
